The Sword and The Staff edition by Bret Wellman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Your world may be coming to the end and you lose all sense of time. You're then have s dream and wake up with a tattoo and all he'll breaks loose. Fantastic interactions and great reading. Please enjoy ad I did...
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It's a little far fetched but hey....;)... We're reading fantasy after all! Lol anyway it's a consistent read not enthralling to the point that I can't put it down but enough of consistent creativity that I wanted to finish. It's worth the read. The writer is good at building his characters & the storyline so that you become invested & want to know what happens. It won't make you pull an all-nighter but let's be honest those awesome writers are few & far between!
I like the blurb and reviews about this book but they fell way short of reality. I did manage to make it to Chapter 10 before giving up.
I think this author wanted to write in every style of Sci-Fi that is on the market today! So the story starts with a boy who lost his parents and has a horrible military instructor uncle (kind of Cinderella like). He ends up in a dream telling him he is the Chosen One and is marked with a tattoo…and of course now he ends up in foster care. Flash forward and the story goes to the “terrorist getting a nuke” then of course “blowing the world up” with said nuke(s). So a quick switch to the military evacuating the civilians to save them resulting in an underground ‘prison’ keeping the civilian population safe…..so three months pass and the civilians won’t take military rule any longer. So a military mission discovers the above ground world is now a jungle with dinosaurs and dragons (think time travel and Land of the Lost). In the mean time flash to Manhattan where the fallout has made the water poisonous and turned the population into zombies (Zombie Apocalypse & also I am Legend rip-off). Flash back to boy rescued by military and now topside in jungle…..he is known as the Choosen One and with an Oracle’s direction starts on a “quest” to find the other two “Horsemen” with two other teenage side-kicks (think Hunger Games or another teenage Disutopia storyline). This is where I stopped because the teenage bratty boy and the ‘teenage angst’ that was just implied to come next was something I was not going to be able to handle.
See why I had to stop at Chapter 10…..I gave it a good effort and benefit of the doubt bay making it to 30% of the book (per my ). Really good thing I got it free or I would be pissed at the wasted money.
I was impressed that I really liked this book. The story was well written and a good amount of action.
